SYNTHESIS BLOG 5/5 stars
Singer-songwriters Lisa Light and Scott Blonde held their pop-rock band together despite the couple's romantic breakup and The Lovemakers' second LP, Let's Be Friends, reflects their recent experiences. Bass, guitar and drums dashed with synth complement the singers' interplay for a rollicking sound reminiscent of the B-52s. The title track stands out as an obvious classic—sarcastic, witty, endearing and heartfelt. The Lovemakers perfectly capture the angst of the young adult, moving past the popcorn crushes of adolescence to the stubbed-out cigarette goodbyes of 30-somethings. This tragic transition is further elucidated on “This Life Is Over,” while the breezy “Hold On To Your Heart” could easily be a pop hit. Plenty of sassy bands hail from neighboring San Francisco, but it's logical that The Lovemakers' particularly biting and incisive verses boil up from the less expensive and more mixed-up Oakland.
